Kayak Fishing Ontario

The popularity of kayak fishing in Ontario and Canada continues to surge with each passing season and has recently been identified as the fastest growing segment in fishing and paddling.  With its rise of mainstream appeal comes better products, events and the formation of local kayak fishing forums, groups and tournaments.

There are lots of various information sources and experiences to be gained through clinics, demos and seminars that run early spring to late fall.  Many of these are free and cover all abilities from beginner clinics for the inexperienced to advanced techniques for those wanting to explore the adventure fishing experiences available.

New for 2010 is the Ontario Kayak Fishing Series sponsored by Hobie Fishing; a three tournament series geared at uniting kayak anglers from across the province, Canada and United States, to compete with amateur and professional anglers alike.  A summer-fall series boasting thousands in prizes and cash, including a fishing kayak for 1st place at individual events and a Hobie Pro Angler to the Series Winner.   Each event offers its own unique opportunities for fishing, learning, relaxation and Fun!!  See ONTARIO KAYAK FISHING TOURNEYS for more details.

See below for Clinics/Seminars, Guides, Trips and other Events on kayak fishing as broken down by their Ontario regions.

  • Southern Ontario Great Lakes Region

Surrounded by Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay, this region is the largest fresh water peninsula in the world.  Southern Ontario is also the most temperate region in the province where the four seasons become very distinct.  Open water for kayak fishing can be found from April to December, with open fishing seasons for most species from June to October.

Consisting of inland lakes, rivers and the Great Lakes, there is never a shortage of species to target from a kayak.  The most sought after fish are Largemouth/Smallmouth Bass, Muskie, Northern Pike, Perch, Walleye, panfish, Brown trout, Lake Trout, Steelhead, Chinook & Coho Salmon.  There are also two "fish superhighways", the Detroit River and the Niagara River.  These two rivers are actually straits that adjoin the Great Lakes Basin.  Fishing on either of these two waterbodies can be very good but is not recommended without an experienced local.

  • Central Ontario

With the Haliburtons, Kawarthas, Muskokas, Algonquin Region, Lake Simcoe and a portion of Georgian Bay, Central Ontario offers some fine fishing opportunities for the kayak angler.  The season is just slightly shorter than the south, with open water from May to November.

There are numerous inland lakes and rivers for the kayak angler to explore.  The lakes come in many variations depths, species and sizes.  The waters can be shallow warm, to deep cold glacial and Lake Simcoe which is similar to the Great Lakes.  Species include Largemouth/Smallmouth Bass, Muskie, Perch Pike, Walleye, Lake Trout, Rainbow Trout, Speckled Trout, Splake and Whitefish.

  • Northern Ontario

Nippissing, Northern Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, Algoma/Sudbury Region, James Bay Watershed, portions of Lake Michigan/Lake Superior and the north-west Nipigon Region make up another diverse and virtually untapped kayak fishing destination.  The season can be much shorter, with freeze-up starting as early as October and staying until late May.

With its inland lakes being famous as the land of big Northern Pike, Walleye and Brook/Speckled Trout, these Northen Ontario lakes also offer great fishing for Lake Trout, Smallmouth Bass and Whitefish.  There is also the Lake Huron and Superior fishery that offers excellent fishing for Steelhead, Atlantic/Chinook/Pink Salmon and Walleye.
